Roadtrip to Thunderbay
By Raphael Mabalot, May 2021
People always ask me why I would drive so far to reach a place. A place like Thunder Bay, Ontario. Take a plane they say... Well, I would tell them, "see, you can't exactly point and park at a place you find interesting from up there can you? 31,000ft is a long ways up!" This trip was exactly that - stopping anywhere I pleased. It introduced me to my first time driving a proper long distance route, clocking in at around 1400km and 15hrs (non-stop).
To be honest, this trip was super spontaneous as I've booked my lodging only the night before leaving, haha! Armed with only 5.5hrs of sleep, at the break of dawn, I set out to Sault Ste. Marie, stopping briefly at some highlighted and interesting sites along the way. Then I pushed on to Thunder Bay which introduced me to my 5th out of the 6 National parks in Ontario and I believe 48 in Canada (more to go!). Pukaskwa National Park and her long shoreline was a sight to see. Lake Superior provincial park was also a treat with its giant rock formations and narrow ravine trails! It's not always about the destination for me, the journey within itself is part of the fun! I just hope you can handle my singing in the car and I'm no singer :)
